Round 5 of GT4 European Series Northern Cup at Circuit Zandvoort had all the extremes for RYS Team InterNetX an #64.
Heavy winds and rain made us struggle with the paddock tents to keep them from blowing away. After the two free practice sessions we faced the Qualifiying sessions on saturday on an inital wet track. Short but heavy rain only ten minutes before the start of Qualifying 1 made us start the session on wet tyres. With the beginning of the session the track dried off. Due to the need to change tyres an bad luck with traffic Jamie was only able to put #64 on starting position 14 for the first race. But this should turn out to be a lucky number in the afternoon. Mads then confidently put the car on position 2 in the grid for race 2 on sunday.
In the afternoon race 1 took place on a dry track. Jamie rushed through the field and handed #64 over to Mads after gaining serveral positions. Mads obviously strongly encouraged by the Jamie-Show displayed a great performance and finished the race on position 2!
The frist podium for RYS Team InterNetX in the season of 2017 was celebrated very wildly and emotionally.
The second race on sunday started off with Mads defending position 2 confidently. After a few laps tried to catch up to the leading Maserati and spun in a fast left corner. We lost a couple of positions but we were able to continue the race with a undamaged car. Shortly after that a competitor’s car caught fire in turn 10. The race was red flagged and the race director decided to skip the mandatory pit stop and change the drivers while the cars were waiting in the pit lane for a cleared track. Unfortunately that decision meant that we wouldn’t have the chance for good points in the RYS Pit Stop Challenge. Race 2 was then started agaim with Jamie at the wheel to perform a great overtaking show like our two drivers showed before that weekend catching up positions.
The racing gods weren’t very gracious then and Jamie spun out into the gravel in a right turn. Only a few laps before the checkered flag we had to retire from the race.
Despite the ups and downs of that weekend the encouragement the podium brought about made us keen on the season’s finale at the legendary Nürburgring in September. no we are hungry for some more trophies and podiums!
